From a Girls hostel to Boys hostel to a PG hostel, the U Block
has seen it all. The story of this abode is as long as Maharashtra
house. Initially a girls hostel, this building has witnessed
many afmcites come and go.The name U-Block comes from the
first batch to rush into the building when the females left.
Latika Mohan (V) was one of the last inhabitants of the girls
hostel and wrote to us;
" V were the last lot of freshers to be ragged in
U Block. Living in U-block was a special experience with its
subterranean mess and proximity to the boy's hostel. Nothing
could beat sitting on the "balcony" and biting into
a forbidden bun-keema from the 'redi 'just before the gates
closed at ten. Lunchtime was made more bearable after a glass
of nimboo-pani from the bai who sat under the tree outsite
the hostel.
As freshers we were consigned to the triple seaters which
were dark and dingy and on the main road - but - the cat calls
and beer bottles that came in flying in from across the fence
more than compensated for the discomfort.
Moving to the new GH was definately more comfortable but
my best memories of college still lie in the old hostel. "
As a boys hostel the U Block blossomed. It could be referred
to as " a vale with fields full of grass and sweet
rivers !" It acquired a reputation of being our
own Bermuda Triangle and the launching pad. The quadrange
in the center, apart from serving as a badminton court for
many a heated match, also witnessed sessions of mass orientation
with the screaming spectators shouting for more from the galleries.
The basement was converted into a gymnasium ( probably some
stud hoped that the girls would return to their esrtwhile
mess !).
With the advent of the new hostel, U-Block was gradually
abandoned and later converted to the PG Hostel. Presently
the U-block is a Post Graduate hostel for Advanced Course
Trainees in their first AFMC phase. Many an afmcite has in
fact returned to his old room in college !!
